PENNSYLVANIA LINE OF DUTY DEATH Deputy Kyle Pagerly
On June 30, 2011, Deputy Kyle Pagerly of the Berks County Sheriff’s Department was murdered in the line of duty. Deputy Pagerly, 28, was pronounced dead in Lehigh Valley Hospital early this morning after gunfire erupted Wednesday night while a task force was trying to arrest a man in Albany Township. Deputy Kyle Pagerly was flown to the hospital near Allentown after the incident in the first block of Pine Swamp Road. The suspect, Matthew Connor, 25, was shot and killed at the scene during the exchange of gunfire, state police said this morning.
A joint detail consisting of troopers from Reading, a state police fugitive task force, U.S. marshals and Berks County sheriff’s deputies went to the residence after obtaining an arrest warrant on Connor for burglary, firearms and assault charges. As they were talking to Connor’s girlfriend, Connor ran out the back of the house and into the woods. Pagerly followed Connor, who had an AK-47 assault rifle. Pagerly ordered Connor to drop the gun before the two exchanged gunfire. Pagerly was shot in the head, according to initial reports. Other officers returned fire and killed the subject. Investigation revealed that the suspect had written a suicide note two days earlier and it is believed that he shot Deputy Pagerly in his attempt to commit suicide-by-cop.
Deputy Pagerly was a 2001 graduate of Wilson High School and Army veteran who had been with the sheriff’s department since 2006 and was a lieutenant in the Spring Township Fire Department, according to the sheriff’s website. Kyle Pagerly’s service to Berks County and its residents extended far beyond the sheriff’s department. Pagerly was born in Reading and graduated from Wilson High School in 2001. After graduating High School, he graduated from the United States Army Military Police Academy and went on to serve in Kosovo in 2002 and Iraq in 2003 and 2004. Pagerly then returned home and enrolled in the Reading Police Academy, graduating in 2005. After becoming a basic graduate from the Federal Bureau of Prisons, Pagerly joined the Berks County Sheriff’s Department. Deputy Pagerly attended the Philadelphia Police Canine Academy in 2009 and became one of the sheriff department’s first K9 deputies.
In his role, Deputy Pagerly became known to many people through the various community events he participated in with his dog Jynx, who was trained in explosives detection. Deputy Pagerly and Jynx would put on demonstrations for the community in local schools and at the Reading Pet Expo. Together, the team of Deputy Pagerly and Jynx served their community and touched many lives.
In 2007, Deputy Kyle Pagerly married Alecia Ann Bird. Deputy Kyle Pagerly was an amazing human being. In addition to his service to his nation, his community, and his family, Kyle loved the outdoors, and participated in triathalons. He was training for his first Ironman later this year. Deputy Pagerly’s abundant and generous love will live well beyond his years on Earth because of his choice to participate in the Gift of Life program. In death, Kyle has donated his organs and tissues so that others may enjoy greater quality and quantity of life. His memory is a blessing.
The Township of Spring Fire Department (aka “85 House”) posted this fitting tribute to Lieutenant Kyle Pagerly. ”Kyle joined the fire service in Spring Township as a 14 year-old cadet member of the West Wyomissing Fire Department on June 30, 1997. Through his years of dedicated service to our community as a volunteer firefighter, Kyle’s energy and ever-present smile was contagious, and his biography reads like the definition of a true hero.”
Deputy Pagerly is survived by his beautiful wife Alecia. They found out a few weeks ago that they were expecting their first child. Please join with us in sending our condolences to the family and peers of Depty Kyle Pagerly.

Rest easy brother. We’ve got it from here.

Kyle was an inspiration to my little man! A perfect gentleman. He & Jynx took time out of their busy schedule to visit my son’s school and put on a demo. Kyle took the time to answer our questions at the Reading Pet Expo. We got to meet Jynx and his beautiful wife Alecia. I pray that you didn’t suffer and GOD wrapped you in his arms and gently took you home. I am sure you put up a fight. I pray now that you rest in peace and god watches over all of your loved ones.

Kyle, you will be soerly missed. It was a great honor to serve our country together. I pray that your family will watched over from above. Rest in peace.
May your rest in peace.
RIP Kyle, you gave the ultimate sacrifice for the safety of others. You were a wonderful humane being and an inspiration for others. You will be dearly missed by your wife, family and friends. Too young to go so soon.
That kid that shot him should of been in jail. That kid was a punk and a lowlife. He was in trouble before. a good man didnt have to die for noreason.
esp when he threatened suicide and suicide by cop before. His father (( a retired police officer) should have known better than to leave any weapons where he could get them, esp with his history.
Prayers & peace and condolences to the family of Deputy Pagerly, especially to Jnyx who will suffer tremendously at the loss of his partner & friend Kyle. Please give him the love & compassion Kyle would want him to have during this difficult time for Kyle’s dog and his family.
Gone but never forgotten. Rest in eternal peace.
I’m so angry over this. How can someone so beautiful and selfless be taken so young, so violently?? Most of us never know the sacrifices people like mr pagerly make, every minute. Not for a paycheck, not for a medal or recognition, but to protect and serve the good people in this world. And it’s a shame that it takes something so disgusting like this to remind us that there are so many unsung heroes out there protecting us. Thank you, Kyle, and thank you to every man and woman out there who put us first and yourself second. Condelences to Alecia, you can tell your child one day how awesome daddy was. RIP!
I’ve been retired for 20 years, and every loss still cuts to the bone. RIP dude. Your buddies and family are proud of you, and you won’t be forgotten soon.
And the rest of you — “Be careful out there! “
I am still speechless over this incident. Prayers for family, co-workers, and all those effected by such a senseless loss.
